The Walter and Matilda Brand family settled in Spokane in the 1920’s. They opened a hardware business on the corner of Second and Bernard, near the old Armory. This landmark store remained in the family until 1990. Great grandsons, Al and Clint, both worked in the store since childhood, and in 1980, they decided to become general contractors and home builders serving Spokane.
Brand Construction’s reputation for quality work helped the company expand and prosper. In 1990, brothers Al and Clint opened their second construction shop, this time in Spokane Valley. The next expansion took place in 2000, when they set up a third facility in Coeur d’ Alene. Today, the founders, Al and Clint remain with the company and are active as advisors. Al’s daughter, Margo Conner serves as the Director of Operations and Clint’s son Marcus is the Director of New Home Construction.
“We credit the pioneer spirit of great grandparents, Walt and Matty for our inspiration,” notes Margo. Great-great grandson, Marcus is quick to add, “Working with my dad and uncle in construction, and being around family members at the hardware store taught me that business is all about providing good service.”
Hard work and good service pays off. Brand Construction has recently been awarded the “Spokane’s Best Award” in the service business category. The company has also been recognized as, “Idaho’s Top Builder” for three consecutive years. Walter and Matilda would have been proud.
